I think most people are aware that the ILP is a hoax, but for those of you who aren't familiar with it, here's a brief summary:
On July 9, 1997, a hiker came across a metal box near Indian Lake, NY. Inside, he discovered photographs and documents that were believed to be top secret. Sadly, the hiker passed away from lung cancer in 2002, and left the box and its contents to his nephew, John. In 2005, John created a blog to document his findings.
The contents of the box revealed that Indian Lake was home to a military base, called the Indian Lake Project (ILP for short). Based on the dates on the documents, John concluded that the ILP was in operation from 1952 to 1955. He believed that the ILP performed mind control experiments on children and that it was a branch of ARTICHOKE (aka MKULTRA).
As time progressed and John discovered more evidence of the ILP (which included the structural remains) he posted that he felt like he was being followed. Soon after, his home was broken into and searched, though nothing was taken. John also posted that he and his wife separated but didn't go into detail about the cause.
John's last post was on February 25, 2013: "I will begin posting updates to the new Indian Lake Project twitter account soon. Please follow @IndianLkProject to stay connected to the latest information." The twitter account has one post from 2/26/2013.
So what happened to John? Did he lose interest in his research or did he fear for his safety? Unfortunately, it would appear that his email address is no longer in use so there is no way to contact him and find out.
I highly recommend you read the full story at indianlakeproject.blogspot.com/. Fake or not, it's still interesting and has an eerie vibe to it.
At first glance, the Indian Lake Project seems very believable. It's no secret that the government has conducted experiments like this in the past, and the similarities to MKULTRA provide it with some credibility. However, upon further inspection, I have to dub this as a hoax.
Let's start with these images:
a dead bird John found on his porch
military helicopter flying over ILP base
abandoned vehicle near ILP base
With a quick reverse image search, you'll find that these are stock photos.
Some of the photos look as if they were crudely done in photoshop, like the following:
"Roger", an ILP test subject
a photo John described as severely water damaged
another test subject, "Sally"
A distressed texture brush was most likely used on these photos along with cloud render to mimic damage.
Final thoughts: The Indian Lake Project is an elaborate piece of fiction. Kudos to John for keeping it going for so long.
